To meet the information desires of the community and allow Flagstaff area residents to participate in the decision making process, community relations activities are scheduled throughout the environmental restoration process at Camp Navajo. Previous activities have included public document reviews, public notices, comment periods, meetings, mailings, site tours, and media days.
Community relations activities are scheduled to coincide with major milestones in the environmental restoration programs. Some public participation activities are required by law. Those activities not required by law may or may not be conducted, depending on the interest of the community. Additional public participation activities will be scheduled if community interest warrants.
Information Repository
The information repository, also known as the public information file, is available for public review in the Special Collections Area at Cline Library, Northern Arizona University. Administrative Record
The administrative record contains all documents and correspondence that form the basis of the official decisions made during the environmental restoration program at Camp Navajo. Public Comment Periods
Prior to performing a remedial action or site closure, a public comment period (usually 30 days) is held. This comment period allows area residents to review and comment on the proposed plan of action. These comments are considered before making a final decision.
Public Notices
At the beginning of the public comment period, legal notices and display advertisements are published in the local newspapers. These notices announce the proposed action, the dates of the public comment period, the location of the information repository, and an address to submit comments.
Public Meetings
During public comment periods, public meetings may be held. These meetings
provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions or make comments and
suggestions. A court reporter may be present to take a verbatim transcript
during the meeting. The transcript is made available for public review. This
information is then considered along with written comments prior to making
a final decision. Public meetings are announced through public notices...

Responsiveness Summaries
A summary of the written and oral comments made by the public during any public comment period or public meeting is prepared, along with responses to those comments. The responsiveness summary, available for review in the information repository, explains how the comments were considered in reaching a final decision. If, as a result of comments, major changes are made to the initial proposed plan of action, a second public comment period is held. Availability of the responsiveness summary is announced through a public notice.
Public Briefings
From time to time, public briefings and site tours may be held to discuss the status of the environmental restoration program and to allow media and residents to view the progress.
Fact Sheets
When appropriate for public meetings or public comment periods, or simply for general distribution of information about the program, fact sheets and newsletters may be issued to describe environmental restoration activities and progress. These fact sheets are made available in the information repository and at public meetings. They also may be mailed to individuals and organizations on the mailing list, or to residents within the community involvement area.
Mailing List
NGB maintains a mailing list of individuals and organizations interested in environmental restoration activities at Camp Navajo. Anyone wishing to be included can contact Randy Wilkinson, IRP manager, at (928) 773-3208.
